We all use online accounts and services that state users’ personal information is encrypted, but what exactly does that means?
Data encryption is a security method that converts readable information – numbers, words, letters, and symbols, known as plaintext – into a scrambled and unreadable format known as ciphertext. Complex algorithms take plaintext and essentially mix it up into a huge set of random characters, providing a secure transfer of information that hides sensitive personal data.
Nearly every app and program utilize some form of encryption, including messaging apps, online banking and payments, cloud storage, password managers, and more.
